Irlanda de Nord: Giants' Causeway & Belfast tour

Probabil cea mai spectaculoasă provincie istorică a Irlandei, Ulster, face obiectul postării de astăzi. Totodată, articolul urmează să fie o călătorie virtuală prin Regatul Unit întrucât această regiune formează Irlanda de Nord, în prezent sub conducere britanică. Dacă sunteți curioși cum puteți călători ușor dintr-un colț în altul al insulei și, poate la fel ca mine, sunteți entuziasmați să puteți tăia de pe listă mai multe țări într-o singură călătorie, atunci cred că vă pot veni în ajutor cu articolul de azi.

Cum am ajuns aici?

Povestea este destul de simplă, chiar dacă pare mai greu de pus în practică. Spre fericirea celor care nu posed un carnet de conducere sau, dacă îl au, nu se simt pregătiți să schimbe direcția de mers (cu toate regulile pe care le presupune sensul invers de a conduce), există destule tururi ghidate de o zi pe toată insula care ne scapă de acest stres. O să spuneți că am putea avea trenul ca alternativă și nu greșiți, însă distanțele sunt destul de mari, iar călătoria cu trenul poate deveni anevoioasă. Trenul este eficient pentru orașele mai mari din apropierea Dublinului, cum ar fi Waterford, Wexford sau Limerick. Totuși, dacă vă doriți să parcurgeți distanțe mai mari sau să ajungeți în zonele mai izolate de pe coastă, cred că un tur ghidat este ceva mai eficient. Bineînțeles că, totul depinde în mare măsură de disponibilitatea și bugetul fiecăruia. 

Pur întâmplător am primit ca recomandare de la Booking mai multe excursii interesante, dintre care și prezenta, ce promitea că te va conduce la obiectivele principale: Giants Causeway și orașul Belfast. Analizând avantajele și dezavantajele unui asemenea tur organizat de agenția Finn McCools, am pus în balanță și am hotărât că este cea mai bună soluție de a vizita mai mult în afara Dublinului (click aici dacă nu ați citit încă articolul de referință). Dacă vă amintiți, am mai procedat așa cu câțiva ani în urmă în Tanger, Maroc (click și aici dacă sunteți interesați) - și atunci, exact ca acum, am programat un astfel de tur ghidat. 

De ce un tur ghidat este o soluție bună?

În primul rând ne scapă de stresul suplimentar cu transportul. Turul asigură transportul (de regulă cu autocarul) în prețul plătit pentru întregul pachet. Există un punct bine specificat de întâlnire de unde pornește și unde se termină turul. Ghizii sunt prietenoși și deschiși, ne oferă multe informații utile și interesante care să ne ajute să înțelegem mai bine locurile vizitate. De asemenea, pe tot parcursul excursiei, se fac opriri în locații neașteptate sau neștiute, la care nu am avea acces la fel de ușor pe cont propriu. Este, într-adevăr, obositor, mai ales că întâlnirea este la 6:45 dimineața în cazul acestui tur, dar, la final, merită tot efortul depus. De persoană am plătit în total 74 de euro și puteți achiziționa turul online de aici, în orice zi doriți.

Condiții de călătorie în Irlanda de Nord:

Având în vedere că este teritoriu integrat Regatului Unit și că este supus politicilor britanice, ne-am fi așteptat ca verificările de la vamă să fie mai drastice dat fiind Brexitul. Totuși, cel puțin în cazul nostru, nu a fost nevoie de formalități suplimentare. Există, din ce am înțeles de la ghidul nostru, o înțelegere între cele două țări de a nu impune reguli cu privire la tranzitul dintre Irlanda și Regatul Unit. Noi am intrat într-o țară nouă fără măcar să ne dăm seama. Totuși, chiar dacă nu există asemenea controale la vamă, vă recomand să aveți un pașaport valabil asupra voastră pentru a fi siguri că vacanța nu este ruinată de lipsa documentului impus de britanici pentru turiștii români.

At the same time, it's going to be a virtual tour of the United Kingdom as this region is currently under British rule. If you are curious how to easily travel from one corner of the island to another and (maybe like me) you are excited to cross off several countries in one trip, then I think I can help you today.

How did I end up here?

The explanation is quite simple, even if it seems harder to put into practice. Fortunately for those who don't own a driver's license or, if they do, they are a bit overwhelmed to change the direction of driving, there are plenty of guided tours all over the island. One could say that the train is a great alternative and they are not wrong, but the distances are quite long and traveling by train can become tiring. Trains are efficient for the larger towns near Dublin such as Waterford, Wexford or Limerick. However, if you want to reach the remote areas of Ireland, I think that a guided tour is a bit more efficient. Of course, it all depends on the amount of free time and budget.

I received by chance several interesting recommendations of tours from Booking such as this one which includes Giants’ Causeway and the city of Belfast. Analyzing the pros and cons of such a tour that’s organized by Finn McCools agency, I decided it was the best way to discover more places outside of Dublin (click here if you haven't read this blog post yet). Maybe some of you will remember that I took a similar trip a few years ago in Tangier, Morocco (click here if you're interested).

Why is a guided tour a good solution?
First of all, it’s a comfortable means of transportation. The tour includes transportation (usually by bus) in the price for the entire trip. There’s a well-specified meeting point where the tour starts and ends. The guides are friendly and open-minded, they give a lot of useful and interesting information that can help you to better understand what you visit. Also, several stops are made throughout the day to locations which we wouldn't easily have access to on our own. It's indeed tiring, especially because the meeting time is at 6:45 am for this tour, but in the end it's all worth it. I paid 74 euro. You can also purchase the tour by clicking on this link.

Travel conditions in Northern Ireland:
Given the fact that Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, I expected custom checks to be more drastic because of Brexit. However, no additional formalities were needed in my case. As far as I’ve been told, there’s an agreement between these two countries on transiting Ireland and the UK. We ended up in a new country without even realizing it. Even though there are no such custom controls, I highly recommend you to own a valid passport (or any other document you need in order to visit the UK) just in case. No one wants to ruin their vacation in such a stupid manner!

Dunluce Castle

Deși se poate vizita de aproape și chiar păși printre zidurile maiestuoase ale castelului, acest tur din păcate nu include și vizitarea celebrului castel din Game of Thrones în detaliu. A fost doar o oprire astfel încât să ne putem delecta cu peisajul spectaculos ce înconjoară mărturia  unui  impunător castel medieval.

[EN] Although it is possible to visit it by walking within the castle's majestic walls, this tour unfortunately does not include the famous castle from Game of Thrones series. It was just a stop so that we could enjoy the spectacular landscape that surrounds the proof of an imposing medieval castle.

Giants' Causeway

O minune a naturii care face parte din lista obiectivelor incluse în patrimoniul UNESCO (3 la număr în toată Irlanda), Giants' Causeway se află la extremitatea nordică a insulei.  Povestea acestui loc are două variante - cea științifică și cea de basm - care explică cum s-a format ceea ce vedem noi astăzi. Prima explicație spune că Giants' Causeway, formată din 40.000 de coloane de bazalt interconectate în prezent, a apărut ca urmare a unei erupții vulcanice din perioada antică. Legenda spune totuși că, de fapt, coloanele ar fi fost drumul bătătorit de gigantul irlandez Finn MacCool, provocat la luptă de către un gigant scoțian.  Bineînțeles, și legenda are mai multe versiuni - una în care Finn câștigă lupta împotriva lui Benandonner și cealaltă în care Benandonner se ascunde de irlandez și distruge drumul pentru a putea evita lupta. Oricare dintre variante ați alege să credeți, cert este că se poate vedea în depărtare Scoția. Gaints' Causeway este, într-adevăr, de neratat dacă vă aflați în Irlanda de Nord și cred că vă va surprinde la fel de mult ca și pe mine.

[EN] A natural wonder that is also an UNESCO heritage site (there are 3 in all of Ireland), Giants' Causeway is located at the northern tip of the island. The story of this place has two versions - the scientific one and the fairytale one - which explain what we see today. The first explanation is that Giants' Causeway (an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns) was formed as a result of an ancient volcanic fissure eruption. However, the legend says that the columns were actually the way to Scotland of an Irish giant Finn MacCool who was challenged to a battle by a Scottish giant. Of course, the legend also has several versions - one in which Finn won the fight against Benandonner and the other one in which Benandonner hid from the Irish giant and destroyed the road so that he could have avoided the fight. Whatever you choose to believe, it is for certain that Scotland can be seen in the distance. Gaints' Causeway is not to be missed if you are in Northern Ireland and I think it will surprise you as much as it did to me.

   

 Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge

După spectaculosul Giants Causeway, în acest tur veți putea observa de la distanță podul de frânghie ce leagă insula Carrick-a-Rede de restul țărmului. A fost pentru prima dată folosit în 1755 de către pescarii de somon pentru a putea avea acces pe mica insulă, iar, în prezent, se poate parcurge de turiști cu programare în avans pentru că doar un număr limitat de oameni îl pot traversa în același timp. [EN] After the spectacular Giants' Causeway, on this tour you will be able to see in the distance the rope bridge that connects Carrick-a-Rede Island to the rest of the coast. It was first used in 1755 by salmon fishermen in order to have access to the small island. Nowadays it can be visited by tourists if they make an appointment. Dark Hedges

Ultima oprire din cadrul turului înainte de Belfast este chiar "Kingsroad" din Game of Thrones. Fagii erau meniți să formeze intrarea impunătoare a noii reședințe a lui James Stuart în 1775.  Există, totuși, și o poveste înfricoșătoare în jurul acestei locații. Se spune că spiritul fiicei lui James Stuart sau al unei servitoare a lui care a murit în mod misterios bântuie aleea cu fagi. N-am întâlnit fantoma, dar poate voi veți avea șansa dacă vă gândiți să vizitați Dark Hedges. 

[EN] The last stop on this tour before Belfast is the "Kingsroad" from Game of Thrones. The beech trees were part of the imposing entrance to James Stuart's new residence in 1775. There's even a spooky story surrounding this location. The spirit of James Stuart's daughter or one of his servants who died mysteriously is said to haunt the beech trees alley. I didn't meet the ghost, but maybe you will get the chance if you're thinking of visiting the Dark Hedges.

Belfast 

Am ajuns, în final, la vedeta turului din Irlanda de Nord - orașul Belfast. Martor al revoltelor irlandeze și al presiunilor politice, Belfast este dovada unor vremuri tulburi, în care atacurile teroriste și împușcăturile pe stradă erau la ordinea zilei spre finalul secolului 20. Din fericire, în prezent, nu numai orașul, ci și întreaga regiune este pașnică. Totuși, nu se putea vorbi la fel cu câteva decenii în urmă. Cu orice irlandez ați vorbi, acesta vă va spune că Ulster le aparține și că, într-o zi, vor recupera regiunea din ghearele britanicilor. Se pare, deci, că perioada de pace va înceta mai devreme sau mai târziu și că se va reveni la luptele de odinioară. Bănuiesc că doar istoria ne va spune.

Cu privire la Belfast în sine, e bine de știut că este un oraș port cu o populație de aprox. 330.000 ce îl clasează pe locul al paisprezecelea în topul celor mai mari din Regatul Unit. Este, de asemenea, locul în care celebrul vas Titanic a fost proiectat și construit (există și un muzeu aici despre întreaga poveste din jurul tragediei). Merită luat la pas, dar nu pentru că ar fi un oraș deosebit, ci, mai degrabă, pentru a observa că atmosfera nu este chiar cea mai plăcută. Se poate simți că au existat momente tensionate de-a lungul istoriei recente. Totuși, chiar și așa, există locuri care mi-au plăcut - clădirea primăriei, în stil victorian, Grand Opera House, hotelul Europe și clădirile din împrejurimi (Hotelul Europe a fost bombardat de zeci de ori). Zona cu hotelurile și opera m-a dus cu gândul la un oraș american, ceva stil new-yorkez în miniatură. 

Eu, personal, nu cred că aș mai vizita Belfast a doua oară, dar m-am bucurat că am avut ocazia să descopăr un loc nou, chiar și pentru un timp limitat cum a fost cel din cadrul acestui tur.

[EN] Now this is the "star" of the Northern Ireland tour - the city of Belfast. Witnessing the Irish riots and political pressures, Belfast is the proof of the times when terrorist attacks and street shootings happened on a daily basis at the end of the 20th century. Fortunately, nowadays not only the city, but the entire region is peaceful. However, it wasn't the same a few decades ago. Any Irish local you would talk to will tell you that Ulster belongs to them and that one day they will reclaim the region from the the Brits. It seems that peace won't last for a long time and that sooner or later fights will start again. I guess only history can and will tell.

As for Belfast itself, it is good to know that it is a port city with a population of approx. 330,000 - it is the fourteenth largest city in the UK. It is also the place where the famous Titanic was designed and built (there is also a museum here about the whole tragedy). Belfast is for sure worth visiting. It isn't particularly a beautiful city, but it's cool that I could feel there have been intense moments throughout recent history. The vibe is not really the greatest. However, I must admit that there were a few places I enjoyed - the Victorian-style city hall, the Grand Opera House, the Europe Hotel and the surrounding buildings (the Europe Hotel was bombed dozens of times). The whole area of the hotels and the Opera House made me think of an American city (more like a tiny version of an East Coast city). I personally don't think I would visit Belfast another time, but I was glad I had the opportunity to discover a new place, even if it was just for a few hours.
